Bio
Growing up in New Rochelle, New York, Zane was passionate about three things: art, BMX racing, and learning the inner workings of all things tangible. Art, kept his mind active and along with keeping him out and in trouble. Growing up in the 90′s a time when graffiti was nearing its prime; he gravitated to the creativity of the art of graffiti. Embracing every aspect of it from vandalism to “black book battles“. Soon, the vandalism aspect had to give way and he moved forward to more positive options.
After relocating from New York to Maryland in 1996, all the trapping of a big city was replaced with a more suburban setting. In an attempt to use his artistic skill set for something positive he enrolled at Howard Community College as an Art Major, which was short lived.
Video games seemed to be the rage and since he could draw, he was encouraged to give a degree in Computer Science a try. A quick wake up call lead him to realize that speaking in 0′s and 1′s in low level system languages was not what he had in mind. Still intrigued by computers, he found a knack in hardware. Completing a CompTIA A+ certification course he was tutoring computer hardware I and II. During that time he took an interest in a broader path towards Information Technology.
Around this time he decided to take a quick hiatus from college he rediscovered his passion for BMX breaking a few bones and tearing some ligaments in the process.
After his hiatus, he transferred to University of Maryland Baltimore County. There he would pursue the Information System Management program with an emphasis in networking. Toward the end of his college career he joined the ISCOM, (Information Systems Council of Majors) a student committee were he served as the web master. The ISCOM is an organization where like-minded IFSM UMBC students help organized events for the IFSM program.
During his final year at college he interned at the NAACP. This proved to be a pivotal moment in his life. He worked under a system administrator and later a web manager, he found that he could pull from his artistic background (his graffiti past) and merge that with the skill set he had acquired throughout college. Leveraging his creativity and technical aptitude, Zane’s role at the NAACP was to help in creating print and web advertisements along maintaining their networking-operating center.
He found him self intrigued with the typography and grid layout. After purchasing the book, “Grid & Raster Systems” by Joeself Muller-Brockman.
He is currently working at MGH as one of their web developers and can be found jumping in and out of WordPress forums helping others when he’s not working on his WordPress networking project: The Kolnik Collection.
